Conducting Excavation

Excavations Division will function as the supreme regulatory institute for examining excavations in the island.

Role of the Excavations Division is as follows:

  1. Research Excavations Activities Director of research relating to pre-historic, proto - historic, medieval and modern history.
  2. Director of excavations for damage assessment. Excavations to be carried out later, if require.
  3. Excavations for tracing prior to conservation of sacred sites. Direction of any excavation to be carried out according to the approved project plans will be done by the field directors. In this connection keeping all the field records and their maintenance, collection of samples for determining the time and taking action to send such samples to laboratories will take place. All human articles (Stone tools, pottery pieces, human and animal remains, beads, wins etc.) will b e basically classified and analyzed under recognized methodologies and thereafter excavation reports will be published.

Human objects referred conservation will be then stored and displayed through museums for promoting public awareness.

Excavations Projects in Progress

  1. Research excavations in the inner city at Anuradhapura jointly carried out by Department of Archaeology and University of Berlin in Germany.
  2. Department of Archaeology and Kava Project in, Germany jointly carry out excavation in Sarvodaya watta at Tissamaharama.

Anybody can seek access to excavation sites and the Project Director permission is necessary for obtaining particulars and photographs.
For Excavation License - Perfected prescribed application form obtainable only from the Excavations Division of the Head office may be submitted together with the Project Proposal.
