Consequent to the amendment 13th to the constitution, the subject of probation and child care services, is a decentralized subject. Hence , nine(09) Provincial Departments of Probation and �Childcare Services have been established. This department, coming under the minister in charge of the subject, has been entrusted with special functions. Among such functions, rehabilitation of those brought under probation and other welfare activities fall within the purview of this department.

This department which comes under the central government, discharge its duties for the benefit of children in Sri Lanka, with the co-ordination of services rendered by the provincial department of probation and childcare services, concerned.

A probation office has been established for each judicial division, under the provincial department of probation concerned.
