Incentive payments for tea replanting

Eligibility

  1. Being a smallholder who owns an uneconomic tea land less than 20 hectares in extent (According to current cultivation subsidy policies) Permission is granted to replant a maximum extent of 1 hectare per year on such lands
  2. This subsidy is paid only for cultivation of vegetatively propagated tea replacing uneconomic old tea on a tea land

Places where applications could be obtained

Cultivation subsidy applications -

  • Head office, all Regional offices, Te Inspector extension officers’ offices and sub offices
  • Tea inspectors could be met in office on Wednesdays and in the field on other days.

An amount of Rs.25.00 should be paid for subsidy applications



Times of submission


From November in the year prior to cultivation is expected to be started to 1st of April in the ensuing year.



Fess payable to obtain the service

All extension services and farmer training programmes are provided to tea smallholders free of charges.In addition, booklets prepared on tea cultivation could be purchased from any Regional Office or Head Office.

  • Steps for a good cultivation of tea-Price Rs.50
  • Infilling in tea lands-Price Rs. 40
  • Intercropping tea with coconut-Price Rs. 10

Approval and permit for cultivation is issued if the land is suitable after conducting a preliminary inspection by visiting the land after submission of the application.Cultivation activities could be commenced then.Permit is issued prior to each cultivation season to commence cultivation.


Note: A replanting permit is valid only for 3 years.

Exceptions or deviations from above requirements and special information

Applications and information could be obtained from Tea Smallholdings Development Societies in the area and members of such societies could forward their service requirements through s0cieties.
The work relevant to each instalment is indicated below and payments would be decided after an inspection by the Tea Inspector / Extension Officer

Tea replanting permit

Cultivation permits is issued limited to one acre. After obtaining this, the permit holder should enter into an agreement to complete the work leading o planting of tea as recommended and obtaining the last instalment.
Rs.190,000 per hectare for Galle, Matara, Kalutara and Hambantota and Rs.200,000 per hectare for Ratnapura, Kandy, Nuwareliya, Kegalle, Moneragala, Badulla, Matale and Kurunegala is paid as incentives for replanting tea.

1. First instalment - On the recommendation of the Tea Inspector extension officer that Mana grass had been planted after land preparation, within 6 months after receipt of permit
2. Second instalment - On the recommendation of the Tea Inspector Extension Officer, 6 months after planting of Mana grass
3. Third instalment - On the recommendation of the Tea Inspector Extension Officer, 18 months after planting of Mana grass (Land should be inspected by the Tea Inspector Extension Officer prior to removal of Mana grass)
4. Fourth instalment - On the recommendation of the Tea Inspector Extension officer, after tea is planted
5. Fifth instalment - On the recommendation of the Tea Inspector Extension Officer, one year after planting for maintenance of tea cultivation
