The Legal Division will attend to following functions under the Antiquities Act.

Appearance for cases filed in various courts of the island against the destruction of antiquities under the Antiquities Act and assisting the Police in legal matters when required.
Dealing with theft of antiquities as mentioned in 1 above
Taking legal action against persons who carry out unauthorized structure within a limit of 400 yards.
Taking action for removal o unauthorized encroachers from archaeological reserved areas in terms of the State Land (Recovery of Possession) Act No. 7 of 1979.
Appearing for civil cases filed against the department apart from the antiquities cases.
Coordination of activities with the Attorney General in fundamental rights cases filed against the department.
