Pattern Approval for weights, Measures and weighing or Measuring Instruments.
The Measurement Units, Standards and Services Department holds the authority to approve weights, measures and weighing or measuring instruments that are manufactured or imported according to OIML 76 standards.
However, the Measurement Units, Standards and Services Department selects and applies only some of the OIML 76 standards that are appropriate for Sri Lanka.
Eligibility
A manufacturer or seller who prefers to obtain this service should be in the following criteria.
Applicant must possess a repair license
In the case of approving an imported instrument, the company or individual that sells the instrument should be identified as an authorized dealer with the manufacturers company.
Note:
If the applicant does not have a repair license he/she must apply for one from the Department of Measurement Units, Standards and Services.
Submission Procedure
Submit Request Letter
- A request letter must be addressed to the Director of the Department.
- The Applicant must indicate in the Application the type of scale, model and range of measurement instrument.
Working Days :- Monday to Friday
Working Hours :- 8.30 am to 4.15 pm
Support Documents required :-
- Business Registration Certificate
- Repair License
- Operation Manual / Service Manual and Circuit Diagram.
- Load Cell details
- Letter of authorized dealership given by the foreign manufacturer.
- Copies of software.
- Sample test data report (Optional)
Application Forms
A letter of request must be addressed to the Director of the Measurement Units, Standards and Services Department with the formal application.
Step-by-Step Procedure:
Step 1 : Any manufacturer or seller (imported instruments) who prefers to obtain pattern approval makes a request by letter addressed to the Director of Measurement Units, Standards and Services Department.
Note : Applicant should indicate in the letter the type of scale, model and range of measurement instrument to obtain the pattern approval along with the Operation manual, Service manual and the Circuit Diagram.
Step 2 : The Department receives the letter and documents and verifies the documents sent by the applicant.
Step 3 : If the produced documents are accepted, the Department informs the applicant to bring the instrument for inspection.
Step 4 : When the applicant brings the instrument then it is checked by the Department.
Step 5 : Once the instruments are approved, the Applicant is informed for a discussion with the director of the department.
Note 1 : If the documents submitted by the applicant are not accepted, the applicant is advised to resubmit valid documents.
Note 2 : If applicant fails to meet the required conditions, he/she will be called for a meeting. Instructions will be provided regarding amendments of the instrument where necessary, before this meeting is convened by the Director of the Department along with the party concerned.
Note 3 : If any amendments are required for the approved of measuring instrument, the party concerned must obtain a new Pattern Approval.

Note:
Those instruments that failed the pattern approval test may resubmit for approval after modification/correction. An additional fee of 20% shall be paid for each resubmission
